{"id":851,"date":"2015-04-27T09:21:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T09:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.price2spy.com\/blog\/?p=851"},"modified":"2016-10-04T13:33:18","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T13:33:18","slug":"pricing-wars-weekend-warriors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.price2spy.com\/blog\/pricing-wars-weekend-warriors\/","title":{"rendered":"Pricing wars: weekend warriors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.price2spy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/weekend-warriors.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3904\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3904 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.price2spy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/weekend-warriors.jpg\" alt=\"weekend-warriors\" width=\"525\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.price2spy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/weekend-warriors.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.price2spy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/weekend-warriors-768x402.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With ever-growing market competitiveness (mostly due to young, emerging online stores who try to make their way with cheap pricing, with extremely low margins) we have noticed a new phenomenon &#8211; prices going down on Friday evening, and up again on Monday early AM.<\/p>\n<p>During our visit to Pro Light + Sound trade show in Frankfurt &#8211; we have confirmed this phenomenon with several musical brands &#8211; who observed it in last couple of months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It typically works like this:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A young and aggressive online retailer, wants to attract more sales<\/li>\n<li>The best way to do so is by lowering the price margin<\/li>\n<li>On the other hand the price shouldn&#8217;t go too low &#8211; usually the manufacturer wants the retailer to observe minimal agreed price (MAP, MSRP)<\/li>\n<li>The retailer knows that big brands use automated services to detect price changes on retail sites<\/li>\n<li>However, the retailer also knows that on weekends there is no-one in brand&#8217;s marketing office<\/li>\n<li>Thus on, Friday evening, the retailer lowers the price: sometimes just for a couple of products, sometimes across the whole brand range<\/li>\n<li>In certain industries (especially music industry) customers are more active on weekends &#8211; and such price cuts usually result with significant sales peaks.<\/li>\n<li>On Monday morning &#8211; the retailer moves the price back up<\/li>\n<li>When brand&#8217;s pricing department contacts them on Monday (because they have detected weekend price cuts) their story is either\n<ul>\n<li>sorry, we had a misunderstanding, the prices are back to normal now, or<\/li>\n<li>sorry, we had a glitch in our software, but there was no one in the office to fix it, or<\/li>\n<li>sorry &#8211; I had to do it, since everyone else does it as well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There are even (rather comical) situations where retailer actually does perform automated price cut on Friday PM &#8211; but his software is not smart enough to get prices back up on Monday AM. In this case the retailer gets caught red-handed \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What kind of advice can we offer?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You need a reliable tool in order to to document &#8216;dirty pricing tricks&#8217; performed by such retailers<\/li>\n<li>The tool also needs analytical features &#8211; so you can analyze retailer&#8217;s behavior over past weekends, and draw some conclusions from it<\/li>\n<li>Do let your retailers know that you&#8217;re familiar with such tricks, and that you have methods to fight them<\/li>\n<li>Arm yourself with a lot of patience \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>Try not to work weekends (unlike myself \ud83d\ude42 )<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Good luck fighting weekend warriors!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With ever-growing market competitiveness (mostly due to young, emerging online stores who try to make their way with cheap pricing, with extremely low margins) we have noticed a new phenomenon &#8211; prices going down on Friday evening, and up again on Monday early AM.
