Customers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gorocketfuel.com\/the-rocket-blog\/whats-the-average-bounce-rate-in-google-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">tend to bounce quickly<\/a> when they visit a website for the first time \u2014 and a lot of those quick exits have to do with poor website design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many online stores make the same kinds of mistakes. They fail to consider the needs of their audience and what most of the modern web looks like. Consequently, they fail to capitalize on some rather obvious and more or less easy wins. In no particular order, here are the most common conversion-killing mistakes and how to avoid them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Being Mobile-First&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-mobile-first-indexing\/346170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Mobile-first indexing<\/a> has been around for nearly half a decade. Yet, many websites still choose to either be merely responsive or completely ignore their mobile users. Since mobile traffic accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/277125\/share-of-website-traffic-coming-from-mobile-devices\/#:~:text=Mobile%20accounts%20for%20approximately%20half,permanently%20surpassing%20it%20in%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">around half of all internet traffic<\/a>, this is a major missed opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t just adapt your desktop website to a smaller screen. Design a mobile experience that takes into account thumb placement, scrolling, and mobile zooming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Etsy<\/a> has done a marvelous job of taking into account exactly what its audience wants to see and how it can best deliver a seamless experience. Nothing on any of their pages is hard to reach, the CTA buttons are the right size, and the site loads like a charm. That brings us to our next point: loading speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compromising Loading Speeds&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose to sacrifice loading times on the altar of extra-high-quality images or homepage videos, you will effectively be killing your potential conversion rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/ranking-factors\/page-speed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Speed is a ranking factor<\/a>, for one. The same rules apply to both mobile and desktop versions: never sacrifice loading speed for the sake of design. You can use a mega menu if you have dozens of categories and subcategories. Don\u2019t use a mobile menu on a desktop site. It seems to be an ongoing trend, but it\u2019s actually quite confusing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlight your key pages in the menu. <a href=\"https:\/\/kopiluwakdirect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Kopi Luwak Direct<\/a>, for example, points you directly to their shop. As your customers have no reason to lie about the quality of your products, first-time visitors will believe them more than they can believe you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a design aspect, you have countless ways to incorporate social proof on a page. You can use it in your header, on your signup page, in the footer, and so on \u2014 wherever you feel it will be the most impactful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s not an eCommerce site per se, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Shopify<\/a> did a great job with social proof. However, if your blog posts are poorly designed, you won\u2019t get anyone to actually read them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/squareup.com\/us\/en\/townsquare\/how-to-start-an-online-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Square\u2019s blog posts<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They include plenty of negative space.&nbsp;<\/li><li>There\u2019s a table of contents at the top.&nbsp;<\/li><li>They break up their posts with bullet points and images.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The links stand out in vibrant blue color.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t write blocks of text, and don\u2019t expect the content to speak louder than its design. No one will want to read a wall of words when they can find a post that\u2019s easier on the eyes in a matter of clicks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Generic Media&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using stock photography on an eCommerce website is a major no-no. You would presumably have custom images for each product, but don\u2019t use generic media on any of your other pages either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will never communicate your values and message as well as custom images will. You won\u2019t stand out at all, as other sites will have used the same photos and videos already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hardgraft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Hard Graft<\/a> provides a great example of using custom, bespoke images well. Also, aim to feature an image of the product in use, which can demonstrate size very well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failing to Demonstrate Expertise&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The design of your website needs to ensure that your expertise in the field is made obvious. Don\u2019t hide your credentials and proof of work in the footer or somewhere low on the page. Whatever element you can add to prove that you are a brand that users can trust, add it up high.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.january.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">January<\/a> is a good example here. They\u2019ve highlighted their coverage by major media outlets and showcased expert testimonials. The brand understands very well that its audience will care much more about these two elements than any amount of sales-oriented mumbo-jumbo. Leads who really want to leave will ignore them, but those who could be swayed will take note.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kurufootwear.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Kuru Footwear<\/a> has a good one, which gives you the chance to win a free pair of shoes if you sign up for their newsletter. It\u2019s highly likely to attract a lot of signups, which can eventually be leveraged into conversions.
