Old Sports & Outdoors

Ever changing prices, ever changing assortment

Years of experience:

Our first clients from this industry date back to our very early days (early 2012), meaning that we have acquired quite some years of experience working with some of US (and world’s) most renowned ski & outdoor sites. This expertise helped us sign on some respectable names from this industry, ranging from UK, Benelux, Scandinavia, Turkey etc.

Products in this market usually have a pretty short life cycle – it is quite common that a product gets replaced only after one season, with another, very similar product, but with a different model name, and of course, very different pricing.

Due to the nature of the industry, product matching is almost always performed manually (because of non-standardized model numbers / product naming), most commonly twice per year (depending on the seasonal nature of the products offered).

One of the challenges in price monitoring for such clients is the ability to distinguish pricing / availability for different variations of a single product (for example: colour/size combinations) – which is one of Price2Spy’s key features.

Price2Spy will enable you to easily identify your competitors’ pricing policies (which probably differ from one brand to another, from one product category to another), and react to important price change alerts (for example, when a competitor lowers the price below a certain threshold). In case MAP-enforcement is needed, Price2Spy will indicate the MAP-pricing violations.

Best price monitoring practices

Here is how Price2Spy can help product managers from this industry:

  • Usually between 30 and 50 most important market competitors get monitored; However, a Danish client of ours monitors nearly 150 sites throughout Scandinavia
  • Marketplaces like Amazon and Ebay (of course, if Amazon / Ebay are operating in client’s market) typically need to be monitored as well (usually for the cheapest price offered). In some cases several different sellers on Amazon are monitored;
  • Number of individual products (SKUs) is usually somewhere between 1000 and 5000 (very few clients monitor their full product range). This makes manual product matching quite acceptable (both in terms of cost and time); However, many of products get discountinued, due to the short life span.
  • Price optimization – with Pricing Strategies you can easily identify products with price increase / drop opportunities – it will result in a clear and interactive list of products and suggested pricing changes which will hopefully result in turnover / profit increase
  • Price change alerts are distributed to the client’s team, according to product manager’s responsibilities (either per category or per brand)
  • Most recent price changes (per brand or category) can be spotted via Pricing Dashboard;
  • The same goes for the share of cheapest products per site or price change history (either per product, or per site);
  • Manufacturers using Price2Spy are relying on MAP module to detect retail sites who are in violation of minimal advertised price.
  • Furthermore, some of our clients who have ‘lowest price guarantee’ use Price2Spy to predict effects of such promotions.
